Final Week to Save 30% on FICO Scores

By Dana on March 24, 2009

This is a reminder that FICO scores are on sale until the end of March.  You can get two of your credit reports and actual FICO scores, the scores most lenders use, at FICO’s own site.  During their 8th anniversary celebration, you can save 30% on your scores so they are about $11 each rather than $16.  Our March 11th article has complete details, links and the discount code.

REASONS TO CHECK YOUR SCORES

1) Knowing your FICO scores gives you the ability to verbally “shop” with your lender beforespending time completing formal applications and lots of paperwork.  If your scores are not close to what the lender is currently requiring, you can save both of you some time, and avoid a Hard Inquiry on your credit, for something you probably won’t qualify for.

2) Checking your own scores does NOT count against your credit rating.  When you apply for a loan or credit card, it adds a hard inquiry to your credit file.  When you do it yourself, it shows up on your credit report, however it is not included in your scores.

3) It gives you a baseline or starting point to measure your credit building progress.  You may not want to refinance your mortgage until later in the year.  By knowing where you are now, you have time to develop and implement strategies to help you grow your scores.
