A Harvard University server that contained personal information on approximately 10,000 grad school applicants was broken into on February 16, 2008, the Wall Street Journal reported on Friday, March 14, 2008.

The hacker infiltrated the server of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences that contained Social Security numbers, email addresses and phone numbers that had not yet been updated with an encryption security project. Harvard is sending warning letters to potential victims and has hired a risk-consulting company to assist those affected guard against identity theft.

This is the second confirmed case of attempted ID theft at Harvard this year; the first occurred in January when officials caught a student employee trying to make fake driver’s licenses and Harvard cash cards.
